Former Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has been appointed Visiting Scholar and Researcher at the African Studies Centre of Boston University African Studies Center in the United States.

The Centre, which operates under the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, promotes interdisciplinary African studies by bringing together scholars and students from the humanities, social sciences, arts, and natural sciences.

Obaseki, who governed Edo State from 2016 to 2024, earned recognition for reforms in public sector governance, digital administration, infrastructure renewal, healthcare, and education.

His administration introduced the EdoBEST programme, a technology-driven basic education reform initiative that gained international attention as a model for improving learning outcomes in developing regions.

During his eight-year tenure, Obaseki’s government also focused on civil service reforms, urban renewal projects, investment promotion, and improvements in healthcare delivery. His administration revamped several public schools and healthcare centres, expanded road infrastructure across parts of the state, and launched digital governance initiatives aimed at improving transparency and efficiency in public service operations.

He also promoted job creation through support for small businesses, agriculture, and the technology sector. However, his administration was not without criticism.

Opposition figures and some stakeholders raised concerns over the state’s debt profile, allegations of political intolerance, and disputes surrounding governance decisions during his time in office. Obaseki repeatedly defended his policies, insisting that the borrowings undertaken by his administration were tied to infrastructure and development projects intended to stimulate long-term economic growth.

As part of his appointment at Boston University, Obaseki is expected to critically examine the successes and challenges of the reforms and policies implemented during his administration. The research is aimed at producing a study that will serve as a guide for African leaders and public servants pursuing governance transformation and economic reforms.

Director of the African Studies Centre, Nimi Wariboko, said the institution is pleased to welcome Obaseki into its academic community.
According to Wariboko, the appointment will enable the former governor to engage with scholars at the university to refine his research framework, evaluate his policies against global governance models, and produce a detailed account of his administration.

He added that the expected book manuscript would make a significant contribution to the Centre’s academic work.

Responding to the news of his appointment as Visiting Scholar, Governor Obaseki said:

“I am excited by this appointment and the privilege it affords me to be part of this world-class university.

“As a Visiting Scholar/Researcher at the African Studies Center, I will have the opportunity to document, explain and review the strategies and frameworks that I adopted to transform the economic and social development landscape of Edo State, which I had the privilege to lead as Governor from 2016 to 2024.

“The rich tradition of rigorous scholarship, global perspective and commitment to tackling the world’s most pressing challenges at Boston University presents the ideal environment for reflection, learning, collaboration, and exchange of ideas.” he concluded.
