Obaseki vs Shaibu: Edo Deputy Gov Clinches PDP Guber Ticket after Parallel Primary

Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has emerged as factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic (PDP) for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State.

Shaibu emerged governorship candidate of the party with over 3000 votes in a parallel primary election held at a venue on Commercial Avenue, Benin City, Edo State capital.

Announcing the results after collation, Bartholomew Moses, the Returning Officer, declared that Shaibu won with an overwhelming majority of votes.

Earlier, it was gathered some delegates of the PDP who had traveled from different parts of the state, went to the venue of the primary holding at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium but were denied entry by party agents who were detailed to identify ‘unfriendly’ delegates.

As a result of their rejection, the delegates later moved to the deputy governor’s house close to government house. There were attempt by thugs to prevent the exercise but the delegates prevailed.

Shaibu reportedly addressed the delegates and advised them to remain peaceful, promising to speak with the primary electoral committee chairman.

He said it was later resolved that a parallel exercise should hold and Shaibu emerged candidate of the election.

Delegates from 12 local government of the state reportedly elected Shaibu as the candidate of the PDP.

It is however doubtful if the party will be able to present an agreeable candidate before the Septemberis 21, 2024 governorship election due to litigation. Three different sets of PDP members have dragged the party to court and from Midwest Herald’s investigation, more members are heading to the court after today’s primaries.
