The maiden Benin Unity Cup delivered high drama on Friday as Ikpoba-Okha struck deep into stoppage time to deny Egor a famous win, while Ovia North East were handed maximum points after Uhunmwonde failed to show up.
The day’s opening fixture at the Crescent Sports Club Field lived up to its billing, with both local governments producing an electrifying display of grit and flair. After a cagey, goalless first half, the match exploded into life moments after the restart.

Egor drew first blood in the 48th minute through Towo Eventus, who showed ruthless composure with a brilliant finish that sent their supporters into wild celebrations and tilted the momentum firmly in their favour.
Just as Egor appeared destined for victory, Ikpoba-Okha produced a stunning late twist. In the 90th minute, Emeka Nwaneda unleashed a surprising display of skill to fire home the equaliser, a goal that silenced the Egor bench and rocked the entire Crescent Football Club pitch as the final seconds ticked away.
In the day’s second fixture, Ovia North East were awarded a walkover victory against Uhunmwonde Local Government after their opponents failed to honour the fixture. Following the official 30-minute waiting period as recommended by football regulations, match officials awarded three points and goals to Ovia North East.
Attention now shifts to Saturday’s fixtures, with Ovia South West set to clash with Orhiomwon, while Oredo I and Oredo II will battle for supremacy in what promises to be another thrilling day of football at the tournament.
The Benin Unity Cup continues to gather momentum, delivering passion, drama and a growing sense of unity through football.
