Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District and Chair of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for taking bold steps towards much-needed tax reform in Nigeria.

He described the reform as overdue and commended the President for prioritizing national interest over political considerations ahead of upcoming elections.

Speaking during an exclusive interview with journalists in Abuja on Monday, the Edo-born lawmaker emphasized that the tax reform bill is not targeted at any specific section of the country but is aimed at addressing long-standing inefficiencies in the nation’s tax system.

“The tax reform is long overdue,” Senator Imasuen stated. “If you ask me, we need to reform and rejig our tax laws to align with present-day realities. There are so many loopholes in the current system that need to be addressed.”

Although a member of the Labour Party, Senator Imasuen expressed his willingness to acknowledge good governance regardless of political affiliations. “I am not an APC Senator, but when I see something good, I must acknowledge it. Tinubu has achieved what many previous presidents couldn’t, and he deserves commendation for this,” he said.

He urged state governors to think creatively and leverage the opportunities available within their states.

“As lawmakers, our role is to foster dialogue. I believe some of the misunderstandings surrounding this reform stem from a lack of proper communication,” he explained.

Senator Imasuen also highlighted the untapped economic potential in various regions of Nigeria, particularly in the North, which he noted has abundant mineral resources more valuable than crude oil.

He criticized the reliance of many state governors on federal allocations, stating, “Governors should stop waiting for monthly subventions and start exploring the resources within their states.”
