Defence Minister Calls for Compulsory Military Training Nationwide

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd.), has proposed compulsory military training for every Nigerian citizen, saying such an experience would deepen public understanding of the sacrifices and responsibilities involved in defending the country.

Musa made the proposal while speaking on the African Leadership Podcast hosted by Ken Giami.
The minister said military training exposes participants to hunger, exhaustion and physical strain, experiences which, according to him, can provide a perspective on life that is difficult to acquire elsewhere.

He was explaining why he believes ordinary Nigerians should have a better understanding of the duties and challenges confronting members of the Armed Forces.

According to Musa, subjecting citizens to aspects of military training would enable them to appreciate the demands placed on soldiers and other military personnel in the course of protecting the nation.

He said the experience could also help Nigerians develop a stronger sense of responsibility towards the country and gain a different perspective on life.

The minister’s proposal comes amid continuing national discussions on security, civic responsibility and the relationship between civilians and the Armed Forces.
