Prof Edoba Omoregie Emerges 11th Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin

The Governing Council of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) today, October 25, 2024, appointed Prof. Edoba Bright Omoregie (SAN) as the Vice Chancellor. The Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law and Legislative Governance emerged in a keenly contested interview that had other 26 applicants for the plum job.

The Chairman of the UNIBEN Governing Council, Prof. Shaibu Umaru, who announced the appointment said Prof. Omoregie emerged out of the 27 persons that applied for the position.

The 55 years law teacher and legal consultant will succeed Prof. Lilian Imuetinyan Salami whose tenure ends on December 1, 2024 as the eleventh substantive Vice Chancellor of the highly rated university.

The Senior Advocate was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1992, after graduating from UNIBEN and the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos. He also bagged his PhD in Comparative Constitutional Law, with specialization in Federalism and Governance from UNIBEN.

Edoba has spent major part of his career as a lecturer in the Faculty of Law, University of Benin.

He has taught Legislative Drafting and Process, Legislative Studies and Electoral Legal and Regulatory Framework for over 10 years at the postgraduate level in the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) under the UNIBEN/NILDS Postgraduate Programmes.

Until his appointment, Professor Omoregie was the Ag. Director of the Department of Legislative Support Services in the Institute. on National Assignment from the University of Benin.

Professor Omoregie comes into his new office with vast practical experience in academics and management.

He is a member of the International Bar Association, Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel, the International Association of Legislation and the Federal Union, among several other international academic bodies.
