The All Progressives Congress in Edo State has called on the police authority to take urgent action against Edo State Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku of the People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria, who the party claimed has turned to a “danger” to peaceful coexistence in the state.
The call to rein in Agbabaku according to APC, became necessary going by the recent alleged violent conduct of the speaker in Owan West Local Government Area, where he had reportedly provoked open attack on Chief Lucky Ohimai.
Midwest Herald gathered from sources in Saboginda Ora that trouble started after Chief Ohimai held a successful empowerment programme for women in the Local Government Area, to support Senator Monday Opkebholo, the governorship candidate of APC in the September 21, 2024 election in the state.
Agbebaku, Midwest Herald learnt was resentful of the success of the program, and this allegedly led to violent threat and slandering of Chief Ohimai’s name.
In a release by the party’s governorship campaign organization, signed by Comrade Orobosa Omo-Ojo JP, Director of Publicity, the call by the APC is urgent, “going by the antecedence of Blessing Agbebaku,” who APC said was suspended in 2010 from sitting in the House of Assembly for carrying firearm and battle axe into the chamber.
The party has therefore called on Edo State Commissioner of Police, State Security Service to timeously arrest the speaker, before he succeeds with his alleged dastardly violent plans.
The statement reads: “As the September 21, 2024 governorship election draws closer in Edo State, our party, the All Progressives Congress has noticed with concern, the untoward actions of Mr. Blessing Agbebaku, speaker of Edo State House of Assembly.
“We have received several reports of wanton intimidation and violent actions exhibited by Agbebaku, directly and sponsored.
“The latest of his ignoramus action is the libelous tirades against Chief Lucky Ohimai, a chieftain of our party in Owan West Local Government Area. The ill mannered blood thirsty Agbebaku, APC learnt is angry that Chief Ohimai’s philanthropic activities in Owan West has liberated the people from the People’s Democratic Party’s ruinous bad governance.
“APC has taken note of the outright despicable falsehood made by the blurry speaker Blessing Agbebaku against Chief Ohimai and the party shall respond appropriately.
“In the light of this and in particular, going by the antecedence of Blessing Agbebaku, who in 2010 was suspended from sitting in the House of Assembly for carrying firearm and battle axe into the chamber, we call on the Commissioner of Police, State Security Service to timeously arrest him before he succeeds with his dastardly violent plans,” the release stressed.
