Senator Neda Imasuen Breaks Ground for Amagba Ultra-Modern Market, Moves to Tackle Insecurity

Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Barrister Neda Imasuen, has commenced the construction of an ultra-modern market in Amagba community, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, with a fresh commitment to facilitate the construction of a police station to strengthen security in the rapidly growing community.

Imasuen performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the market on Thursday, marking the commencement of construction of about 30 lock-up shops and 40 open stores designed to boost commercial activities and improve access to basic goods for residents.

The project, which is being executed as a federal constituency intervention, attracted community leaders, including representatives of the Amagba Landlords Association and the Odionwere of the community among others.

Speaking at the ceremony, Imasuen said the market was conceived in response to the difficulties residents face travelling long distances to access basic commodities.

He said the rapid growth of Amagba in population and economic activities made the provision of a functional market imperative.

“What prompted me to embark on this project is because, looking at this community, it’s a huge one, it’s a very large community. They really don’t have certain basic amenities. One of those is the market, which I think the women need for their businesses,” Imasuen said.

The Senator noted that residents should not have to travel far outside the community to purchase everyday necessities, stressing that the new market would create opportunities for traders while strengthening the local economy.

“You can imagine that you have to travel far from here to access whatever it is that you want to buy. These are busy communities. And so I thought it wise that, as big as Amagba is, it’s a high sign that we have a market here,” he said.

According to him, the market would have a multiplier effect on the community as more people move into Amagba and commercial activities continue to expand.

“We’re looking at about 30 lock-up stores and 40 open stores,” he disclosed.

The lawmaker also announced a major security intervention for Amagba, revealing plans to facilitate the construction of a police station in the community.

The lawmaker said the absence of a police station was a major concern, particularly because residents currently depend on the Ugbor Police Station, located around Benson Idahosa University, for police response.

“There’s no police station in Amagba at all. And you can imagine, if there’s an emergency, they will have to travel to Ugbor Police Station, which is around Benson Idahosa University, BIU. You can imagine how far that is, to have the police respond to whatever emergency there is,” he said.

He explained that the proposed police station would serve not only Amagba but also neighbouring communities that currently lack adequate access to police services.

“Amagba has come of age and the population has increased tremendously. Even the economic activities have also picked up. And so we need a police station to be able to address the needs of the people around here,” Imasuen said.

“And I’m sure that that police station will not just serve Amagba. It will serve an adjoining community further up that does not have the services of the police.”

The development comes as Amagba continues to experience population growth and increased commercial activity, creating additional demand for basic infrastructure and security services.

The Project Manager, Engr. Hassan Bakr Shugaba, assured residents that the market project would be completed within one month.

Shugaba’s assurance is expected to bring early relief to traders and residents who have been anticipating improved commercial infrastructure within the community.

Chairman of the Amagba Landlords Association, Dr Vincent Abah, said the community was lacking several essential amenities but described the Senator’s intervention as an important first step.

“Many amenities are lacking here. But the first thing is taking the first step which Senator Imasuen has taken. He has commenced a bigger project here which is a federal government constituency project,” Abah said.

He expressed appreciation to the Senator, stressing that the project would contribute significantly to the development of the community.

The Odionwere of Amagba community, Pa Joseph Iduoriyekemwen, JP, also commended Imasuen for the intervention and prayed for more opportunities for the Senator to deliver additional development projects to the community.

The market project and proposed police station are expected to address two critical needs identified by residents — improved economic infrastructure and enhanced access to security services — as Amagba continues its rapid expansion.
