Edo Civil Society Organisations Honours Dr Umakhihe with Lifetime Award

In 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and this year’s World Human Rights Day marks 75 years of the UDHR, the landmark document that enshrines the rights of all human beings regardless of race, religion, gender or any other marker.

The World Human Rights Day is intended as a global day of empowerment for all of humanity. In Edo State, the Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) has made great progress in advancing human rights of persons whose rights were trampled upon by government or individuals.

This year’s World Human Rights Day was celebrated on December 10, 2023 in Benin City, Edo State by members of EDOCSO with a sub-theme – Drug Abuse, a Societal Problem and Possible Solutions. The group also used the occasion to recognise and reward role models in Nigeria.

Ernest Afolabi Umakhihe, PhD was among the Community Leaders that were honoured at the Edo Civil Society House.

He received the award of excellence in recognition for his selfless service to the nation in agricultural development, particularly, for his concern and support for local farmers.

Dr Umakhihe dedicated his award to the Edo people, especially those whose rights have been abused and suppressed wrongly, and also to farmers in Nigeria and Edo State in particular.

Dr Umakhihe has been noted by different interest groups, as an outstanding leader with track records of accomplishment, that is advancing neighborhood improvement and a community volunteer who has exemplified strong commitment to neighborhoods through active participation in important community issues.

The Chairman of Police Service Commission, Dr Solomon Arase, IGP rtd, was also honoured with an award of excellence, in recognition of his contribution to humane policing.
