Christ Chosen Church Explains Retirement of Apostle Pius Igberase, Rejects Bribery Claims

The leadership of Christ Chosen Church of God International has broken its silence over the retirement of its former Director of Administration, Apostle Pius Igberase, while dismissing allegations that members of the disciplinary panel were bribed.
In a statement issued on Friday in Benin City and jointly signed by the Church’s Secretary General, Apostle Jones Ikibeh, and Public Relations Officer, Apostle Newton Egharevba, the Church said Apostle Igberase’s retirement followed an internal disciplinary process conducted in line with its constitution.
According to the statement, concerns about the former administrator’s conduct emerged after the Spiritual Leader returned from a three-month working visit on May 18, 2026.
The Church alleged that Apostle Igberase exceeded his authority during the Spiritual Leader’s absence, made statements considered inciting against the leadership, wore an unauthorized cassock during the 2026 Baptism Service, and engaged in conduct deemed disorderly at the Women’s Convention.
It also accused him of promoting tribal sentiments and failing to demonstrate household leadership in accordance with the Church’s standards.
The Church said Apostle Igberase was issued a query on June 10 before appearing before a 21-member Special Disciplinary Panel, chaired by Apostle E. Akugue, on June 12.
According to the statement, the panel found his response unsatisfactory and recommended his dismissal. However, the Spiritual Leader reportedly exercised his discretion by approving his retirement with full severance benefits instead of dismissal, describing the decision as an act of mercy and restraint.
The Church also denied allegations circulating on social media that members of the disciplinary panel received ₦1 million each to influence the outcome of the proceedings. It described the claims, along with related videos and documents, as false, manipulated, and intended to mislead the public.
Expressing concern over alleged threats by some supporters to shut down church branches and disrupt activities, the Church warned that it would seek legal protection for its members and properties if necessary.
It urged members and the general public to rely solely on official Church communication channels for accurate information and to avoid spreading unverified reports capable of creating division.
The statement reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to due process, unity, and its mission of preaching the Gospel.
