Arteta Faces Fresh Transfer Pressure After Arsenal’s 3-1 Pre-Season Defeat to Real Betis

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta may be forced to step up his pursuit of new signings after his side suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Real Betis in their first major pre-season test.

The Gunners, who had comfortably beaten Girona 4-1 after a low-key training match against MK Dons, struggled to match their Spanish opponents in a contest that exposed several weaknesses ahead of the new campaign.

While Arsenal were missing several key players, including Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, first-choice goalkeeper David Raya and injured defender William Saliba, the performance raised questions about the squad’s depth as Arteta prepares for another Premier League title challenge.

The north London club is expected to complete the £75 million signing of Bruno Guimaraes in the coming days, a move that would strengthen the midfield. However, reports that Real Madrid have offered Vinicius Junior a lucrative new contract appear to have dealt a blow to Arsenal’s hopes of luring the Brazilian winger to the Emirates.

One of the biggest talking points from the defeat was the performance of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, whose costly errors gifted Real Betis the initiative.

Kepa, whose future at Arsenal has been the subject of speculation following the arrival of former Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, failed to seize the opportunity to impress.

He was at fault for Betis’ opening goal after misjudging a corner and allowing Riquelme to score from close range. The Spaniard then compounded his difficult evening with a poor clearance that handed possession back to Betis, leading to a stunning strike by Nelson Deossa for the visitors’ second goal.

The latest display has done little to ease concerns over the significant gap in quality between Kepa and first-choice goalkeeper Raya. His mistakes also revived memories of his costly error in last season’s Carabao Cup final.

Despite the defeat, there is little sense of panic within Arsenal’s camp. Arteta was without several first-team regulars, while the midfield and attack were depleted by the absence of international stars.

The Arsenal boss will also draw confidence from recent history. Last summer, the Gunners lost pre-season fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal before producing an outstanding 2025-26 campaign, demonstrating that friendly results are not always an accurate measure of a team’s prospects.

With three more pre-season fixtures remaining before the Premier League season begins, Arteta still has time to integrate returning players, improve match fitness and fine-tune his squad.

Nevertheless, the loss to Real Betis has reinforced the belief that Arsenal may still require additional reinforcements if they are to compete successfully on multiple fronts in the coming season.
