Breaking: Court includes Benin Traditional Council in Suit Challenging Oba of Benin’s Authority
By Reporter
The High Court sitting Benin City has allowed the inclusion of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) as a party in a lawsuit filed by suspended Dukes against Oba of Benin, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II.
The suspended Dukes, representing Evbuobanosa and Egbaen Siluko Dukedoms, challenged their suspension and claimed only the State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, had the authority to remove them.
Mr Justice Peter Akhihiero granted the motion to include BTC as the third Defendant, following an application by the second Defendant Counsel.
The court directed relevant parties to amend their documents accordingly. While some parties supported BTC’s inclusion, the claimants objected, urging the Court to award costs against Oba of Benin.
However, Justice Akhihiero rejected their prayers, emphasizing the importance of allowing all relevant parties to participate.
The case has been adjourned to July 15, 2024. Security personnel were present at the court premises, where various groups, including members of the Royal family and Chiefs, expressed support for the Oba.
