WAFU: Edo Queens Run Riot in Ouagadougou, Hammer AS Garde Nationale 7-0

Nigeria’s Edo Queens made a spectacular start to their WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifying campaign on Tuesday, thrashing Nigerien side AS Garde Nationale 7-0 in their opening Group B fixture in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The Nigerian champions dominated from the outset, combining pace, movement and clinical finishing to overwhelm their opponents and secure one of the tournament’s biggest opening victories.
Chioma Moses opened the scoring after just five minutes, calmly converting to give Edo Queens an early advantage.
Moses doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time when she converted from the penalty spot, sending Edo Queens into the break with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.
The Benin City-based side returned from the interval with even greater intensity, with Atume Doosuur extending the lead two minutes into the second half. She completed her brace in the 56th minute to make it 4-0.
Aminat Folorunsho added a fifth goal in the 62nd minute as Edo Queens continued to exploit weaknesses in the Nigerien defence.
Moses then completed her hat-trick in the 76th minute, capping an outstanding individual performance and putting the result beyond doubt.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi completed the rout in the third minute of added time to seal a commanding 7-0 victory.
Moses was subsequently named Woman of the Match after her three-goal performance, which highlighted the attacking threat Edo Queens possess heading into the remainder of the competition.
The emphatic victory is another statement of intent from Edo Queens, who made their mark on the continental stage in 2024 by winning the WAFU-B qualifying tournament on their debut.
They went on to represent the zone at the CAF Women’s Champions League, finishing fourth in the 2024 edition and establishing themselves as one of the emerging forces in African women’s club football.
However, Edo Queens will face a tougher test in their remaining Group B fixtures, with clashes against Ivorian champions ASEC Mimosas and Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa still to come.
Those matches will provide a more demanding assessment of the Nigerian champions and could prove decisive in determining their chances of progressing from the WAFU-B qualifiers and securing another appearance at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
For now, though, Edo Queens have sent a powerful message in Ouagadougou: they are in Burkina Faso with confidence, firepower and serious continental ambitions.
