UEFA Threatens Boycott of FIFA Competitions Over World Cup Investment Plan

Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, has threatened to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, if the world football governing body proceeds with plans to sell ownership stakes in its flagship tournaments to private investors.

According to Reuters, UEFA and its 55 member associations unanimously approved the decision in a 55-0 vote during an emergency meeting held on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in the standoff with FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the controversial proposal.

The dispute centres on FIFA’s plan to establish a new commercial subsidiary to manage the World Cup and other FIFA competitions, with minority ownership stakes to be offered to private investors.

In a strongly worded statement issued after the meeting, UEFA declared that no European national team would participate in FIFA competitions while the proposal remained on the table unless FIFA completely withdrew the plan and provided legally binding assurances that it would never pursue private ownership of its tournaments.

“The World Cup is not for sale,” UEFA said, warning that allowing private investors into the ownership structure of football’s biggest competitions would permanently shift the sport’s focus from its sporting values to commercial profits and investor interests.

Opposition to the proposal is also gathering momentum outside Europe.

The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), which represents 41 member associations, also rejected the initiative on Thursday, raising concerns over transparency, governance and what it described as the absence of proper consultation and due process.

Similarly, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) criticised FIFA’s proposal, saying the confederation was not consulted before the plan was publicly unveiled.
