UN Envoy Raises Alarm Over Insecurity in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria — A United Nations envoy has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, warning that persistent violence, armed attacks, and humanitarian challenges continue to threaten stability and development across the country.
Speaking during a recent visit to Nigeria, the envoy highlighted the growing impact of insecurity on vulnerable communities, particularly in the country’s northern and central regions, where attacks by armed groups, banditry, and communal conflicts have displaced thousands of people.
The UN representative noted that insecurity is not only causing loss of lives but is also undermining economic activities, disrupting education, and worsening humanitarian conditions.
According to the envoy, many families have been forced to flee their homes, leaving them in urgent need of food, shelter, healthcare, and protection.
“The continued violence is having devastating consequences on communities and is hindering efforts to achieve sustainable development,” the envoy said, urging all stakeholders to work together to address the root causes of the crisis.
The envoy called for strengthened cooperation between federal and state authorities, security agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners to improve security and support affected populations.
Emphasis was also placed on the need for investments in youth employment, education, and social inclusion as part of long-term solutions to the challenges facing the country.
Nigerian authorities have repeatedly reaffirmed their commitment to tackling insecurity through ongoing military operations and other security initiatives.
Government officials maintain that efforts are being intensified to curb the activities of terrorist groups, armed bandits, and criminal networks operating in various parts of the country.
Humanitarian agencies, meanwhile, continue to appeal for increased support to assist millions of people affected by conflict and displacement. The UN envoy stressed that sustained international assistance and stronger local partnerships would be critical to restoring peace and improving living conditions in affected areas.
The warning comes amid renewed concerns from local and international observers over the security challenges confronting Africa’s most populous nation, with calls growing for comprehensive measures to address both immediate threats and the underlying factors driving instability.
