The #EndBadGovernance protest that started on August 1, 2024 to demand good governance from the federal government of Nigeria, has spread to local government councils.

Yesterday, protesters in Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State set fire to parts of the local government secretariat and also damaged vehicles.

The rioters went ahead to vandalize the residence of a former Deputy Governor Baba Tela, looted his properties.

The unrest quickly spread across multiple streets in Azare town within Katagum LGA.

In response, the Bauchi State Government has implemented a 24-hour curfew in the Katagum Local Government Area in response to the violence.

Bauchi Government explained that in the light of the extensive damage to government buildings and private properties, Governor Bala Mohammed had imposed curfew to prevent further escalation of the situation.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Ibrahim Kashim.

“Given the worsening conditions in Azare and its surroundings, which have resulted in the destruction of public property, theft, and victimization, His Excellency, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, has approved a 24-hour curfew in the Katagum Local Government Area to manage the situation,” the statement stated.

“The governor has also instructed all security agencies to respond to the unrest and apprehend those responsible for the violence, while encouraging law-abiding citizens to cooperate with law enforcement during this time,” the release said.

Since the beginning of the protest, Nigerians have called on organisers to extend their demand for good governance to the 36 states governors and 774 local government councils, who they argued have continued to hinder the even development of Nigeria.
