2027 Elections: Uncertainty Trails Party Candidates in Edo
By Arit Mbeh
Uncertainty continues to trail the emergence of candidates for the 2027 general elections in Edo State, as major political parties that recently conducted their primary elections are yet to officially declare winners.
The development has created anxiety among aspirants, party faithful, and supporters across the state, with many expressing concern over the prolonged delay in releasing the results of the exercises.
Among the political parties caught in the web of uncertainty are the All Progressives Congress (APC), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), all of which reportedly conducted primaries but have yet to make official pronouncements on the outcomes.
Investigations revealed that disagreements arising from the conduct of the exercises, petitions from aspirants, allegations of imposition, and claims of irregularities have contributed to the delay in announcing successful candidates.
In the APC, the primary election was reportedly marred by disputes over delegate accreditation and allegations of manipulation of voting procedures, including accusations of imposition by party leaders, whom some aspirants accused of demanding huge sums of money.
The aggrieved aspirants blamed their failure on their inability to bribe certain party leaders.
In some extreme cases, rival camps declared parallel results and have continued to lay claim to victory based on unofficial figures, while party leaders remain silent on the final outcome.
Reports also painted a scenario in which some aspirants demanded refunds from party officials who allegedly failed to deliver on their promises.
The PDP is also battling internal disagreements following the legal hurdles confronting the party.
For the ADC, the party’s plan to produce consensus candidates reportedly failed amid allegations of imposition, exclusion of some delegates, and concerns over the collation of results. The situation has generated controversy, with aggrieved aspirants demanding a review of the exercise.
The situation has also delayed the official release of results as party leaders seek consensus.
Similarly, the NDC has been unable to announce winners following protests by contestants who alleged irregularities during the primary election.
Petitions submitted to the party leadership are said to be under consideration, further prolonging the process.
The inability of the parties to release the results has fuelled speculation across the state, with supporters relying on unofficial figures and claims circulating on social media and within political circles.
Political observers warn that the prolonged delay could deepen divisions within the parties and weaken their preparations for the 2027 elections if urgent steps are not taken to address the grievances of aspirants and ensure transparency in the process.
According to analysts, the timely declaration of primary election results remains a critical component of internal democracy and party stability.
They argue that uncertainty surrounding the emergence of candidates often breeds mistrust, litigation, and defections by dissatisfied members.
Meanwhile, party members and supporters continue to await official announcements from the APC, ADC, PDP, and NDC on the outcomes of their primaries.
As consultations and reconciliation efforts continue behind closed doors, the political atmosphere in Edo State remains tense, with many stakeholders hoping the parties will resolve their differences and unveil their candidates in the interest of party unity and electoral preparedness.
For now, uncertainty remains the dominant feature of the state’s political landscape as aspirants, supporters, and voters await clarity on who will eventually emerge as candidates for the 2027 elections
