Senate Votes Down Oshiomhole’s Motion to Audit Military Spending

The Nigerian Senate has rejected a motion sponsored by Senator Adams Oshiomhole seeking a comprehensive investigation into the utilisation of funds appropriated to the military for the fight against insecurity.
According to a video shared by Africa Independent Television (AIT) on June 3, 2026, lawmakers argued during plenary that although the country continues to face serious security challenges, a probe of military spending at this time may not produce the intended outcome.
Several senators maintained that the upper chamber should first receive reports on the implementation of previous resolutions before initiating fresh investigations. Others accused Oshiomhole of grandstanding and attempting to position himself as an opposition figure within the ruling establishment.
During the debate, one senator called for a security audit, questioning how allocated funds were distributed and utilised. However, the majority of lawmakers voted against the proposal.
The decision comes amid worsening cases of banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats, particularly across Nigeria’s North Central and North West regions.
While rejecting the motion, the Senate commended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address insecurity and reiterated the need for stronger oversight of security expenditures.
