After months of speculations, Senator Bernard Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South Senatorial District, and Chairman Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition, finally dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The carnival-like event which lived up to the billing, held at the Festival Hall inside Edo State Government House, Benin City. Governor Monday Okpebholo’s decision to receive Senator Imasuen and thousands of his supporters on Democracy Day, inside the ceremonial Festival Hall, is seen by several political observers, as a welcome collaboration to finally resolve the unalluring leadership in Edo South.

Several APC leaders, led by Governor Okpebholo, State Chairman, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, State Secretary, Engr. Lawrence Okar and others received the former LP senator to their fold.
Speaking at the ceremony, Imasuen reiterated that his defection was the result of the call by members of his constituents to join the centre to fast track development in Edo South.
He stressed that the developmental strides achieved so far by Governor Okpebholo and the progress made by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu through the APC Renewed Hope Agenda informed his decision to join the APC.

“My decision is about our people in Edo South. It is not about me or my interest, but borne out of a commitment to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies and to contribute meaningfully to the progress of Edo State under Governor Monday Okpebholo.
“From today onwards, together, we shall work to make this party even stronger and better,” Imasuen said.
He thanked President Tinubu and the leadership of APC in the State for receiving him in an unprecedented manner, while pledging to work tirelessly for the success of the party without fail.
Governor Okpebholo who was in his elements danced to the festive music, just as he described Senator Imasuen’s defection as a significant moment in the State’s political history.
He announced that the APC will celebrate Imasuen’s homecoming in a more elaborate ceremony that will feature the national chairman and other leaders at a later date.
“Today, history is made. The only senator from the opposition in Edo has joined the ruling party. We were colleagues in the Senate and shared progress reports regularly. Now, he is home,” the governor said.
In his well delivered address, Tenebe expressed confidence in the ability of Imasuen to contribute to the growth of the party both in the state and national. While receiving the register of thousands of LP leaders and members that decamped along with Imasuen, he urged them to register their membership with APC at their ward units.
Tenebe described Godwin Obaseki as an anti-democratic element that refused to swear in 14 elected lawmakers during his tenure.
Others that witnessed the historic event were the Deputy Governor Hon. Dennis Idahosa, APC Edo Central leader, Gen Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd) and others.
