Okowa in EFCC Net, May Arrest Obaseki Next Week

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has detained the immediate past governor of Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

The anti corruption agency took the former Peoples Democratic Party Vice Presidential Candidate into custody in Port Harcourt, Rivers State over alleged embezzlement of resources belonging to the state during his tenure as governor in the oil rich state.

Okowa is alleged to have diverted N1.3 trillion of the 13 per cent derivation fund from the Federation Account between 2015 and 2023. The accused was detained when he reported at the Port Harcourt Directorate of the EFCC on the invitation of investigators handling his matter.

The former governor was alleged to have failed to account for the funds and another N40 billion he allegedly claimed to have used to acquire shares in the UTM Floating Liquefied Natural Gas.

The EFCC also claimed that Okowa allegedly bought N40 billion worth of shares in one of the major banks in Nigeria, representing eight per cent equity, to float the offshore LNG.

The anti-graft agency is also investigating the former governor’s alleged diversion of funds to acquire estates in the nation’s capital, Abuja, and Asaba in Delta State.

The EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, late this evening, confirmed Okowa’s detention, but did not give details.

Also, barring any last changes, the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki will be arrested next week in Benin City.

A reliable source confided in Midwest Herald that Obaseki will “certainly be brought in to provide answer to questions surrounding the corruption allegations that some petitioners have brought against him.”

Our investigation shows that Obaseki will be arrested shortly after the formal handing over ceremony at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
