The Kano State Police Command has detained a chieftain of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), Aminu Abdullahi Warkal, over the alleged display of a firearm during a political rally in the state.

Warkal, an NDC candidate for the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Local Government Area, was reportedly seen in a viral video brandishing what appeared to be a pump-action rifle during a rally organised in support of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The incident has sparked concern over the use and display of firearms at political gatherings, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The police, according to reports, invited Warkal for questioning following the circulation of the video and commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged firearm display.

The Command is expected to establish whether the weapon was licensed and whether it was actually discharged during the rally.

There have also been claims on social media that the firearm was fired into the air. However, this has not been independently established, and the police have not confirmed that the weapon was discharged.

The incident comes amid growing calls by security agencies and political stakeholders for political parties and their supporters to avoid actions capable of provoking violence or undermining public order during campaigns.

The police investigation is expected to determine whether any offence was committed under Nigeria’s firearms laws and whether further action will be taken against the politician.
