ABA, Abia State — Abia State’s drive to revive its manufacturing sector is increasingly hinging on Geometric Power’s electricity project, as Governor Alex Otti backs efforts to sustain power supply, lower production costs and restore Aba’s competitiveness as a major industrial hub.

The initiative targets one of the biggest constraints facing manufacturers in the state: unreliable electricity, which has forced many businesses to depend on expensive petrol and diesel generators, limiting production and discouraging expansion.

The Aba Integrated Power Project, developed by Geometric Power Limited under the leadership of Professor Barth Nnaji, was commissioned on February 26, 2024. The facility has an initial generation capacity of 141 megawatts, expandable to 188 megawatts, and is designed to serve businesses and households within its designated service area.

Otti has backed the project as part of his administration’s broader industrialisation agenda, working with the company and other stakeholders to address challenges affecting power generation and gas supply.

For manufacturers in Aba, a major commercial and industrial centre, dependable electricity could reduce operating costs, improve productivity and encourage investment in modern equipment. The city’s manufacturing base spans garments, footwear, leatherworks, furniture and metal fabrication.

Recent reports have highlighted businesses seeking to expand production as electricity availability improves. Garment maker Beyond Clothing reportedly produces about 8,000 garments weekly, while furniture manufacturer R&A Mahogany and Interiors has invested in computer-controlled machinery to improve local production.

However, sustaining the gains remains a challenge. Following an electricity disruption in August 2026 linked to gas supply difficulties, Otti commended Geometric Power for restoring supply but urged the company to diversify its gas sources and establish adequate backup arrangements.

The incident highlighted the importance of energy security to Abia’s industrial ambitions. Manufacturers need consistent electricity to maintain production schedules, meet orders and plan expansion.

The state government has also expressed interest in extending the benefits of improved power supply beyond Aba, including to Umuahia, potentially broadening opportunities for businesses across Abia.

Beyond electricity generation, the success of the industrial revival will depend on affordable tariffs, reliable distribution, access to finance and improved transport infrastructure.

For Otti’s administration, the Geometric Power initiative represents an opportunity to translate Abia’s longstanding entrepreneurial strength into higher production, new investment and employment. Its long-term impact will depend on whether reliable and affordable electricity can be sustained and made accessible to more businesses across the state.
