Breaking: Former Delta Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies at 71

Former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has reportedly died at the age of 71.

Uduaghan’s death was said to have occurred in Abuja on Monday, October 19, 2026, following a protracted illness, according to reports citing a family source.

Born on October 22, 1954, Uduaghan was a medical doctor and prominent political figure who governed Delta State for two terms, from 2007 to 2015, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

During his tenure, his administration pursued the Delta Beyond Oil agenda, which sought to diversify the state’s economy and reduce its dependence on crude oil revenue. His government also prioritised infrastructure development, healthcare delivery, youth empowerment and economic development across the state’s three senatorial districts.

Among the major initiatives undertaken during his administration were improvements to road networks, healthcare facilities and developments associated with Asaba Airport. His government’s economic diversification agenda also sought to expand opportunities beyond the oil and gas sector.

Uduaghan earned the sobriquet “Talk and Do Governor,” a description widely associated with his supporters’ perception of his commitment to translating policy promises into tangible development projects.

Before his emergence as governor in 2007, he served as Delta State Commissioner for Health and later as Secretary to the State Government under the administration of his predecessor, Chief James Ibori. His background in medicine and public service shaped his involvement in healthcare administration and state governance.

He succeeded Ibori as governor in 2007 and secured re-election in 2011, completing his second term in 2015.

Beyond his political and administrative record, Uduaghan was regarded by associates as a figure who sought to foster peace, political cooperation and unity among Delta State’s diverse ethnic and political groups.

His reported death marks the end of a significant chapter in Delta State’s political history, given his years of service in public administration and his two-term tenure as governor.
