Edo Assembly ‘Impeaches’ Ex-Speaker Agbebaku, Days After Resigning

The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached Mr. Blessing Agbebaku as Speaker after rejecting his voluntary resignation.

His removal came a week after he resigned, reportedly to avoid impeachment after members of the Assembly had already secured the required two-thirds signatures in support of his removal.

Agbebaku had told his colleagues, in an address announcing his resignation, that Governor Monday Okpebholo had requested that he step down to save him from the planned impeachment.

At plenary on Monday August 24, 2026, a motion to substitute his resignation with impeachment was moved by the Majority Leader, Mr. Ojezele Sunday, who denied receiving Agbebaku’s resignation letter.

Ojezele said Agbebaku’s resignation process was unknown to parliamentary practice and did not conform to parliamentary procedures.

He subsequently moved a motion to impeach Agbebaku as Speaker. The motion was seconded by Mr. Oshomah Ahmed, member representing Etsako Central Constituency.

The motion was sustained through a voice vote.

The new Speaker, Mr. Yekini Idaiye, used the occasion to take a swipe at his predecessor, Agbebaku, while threatening to make him face the law if he failed to return government property in his possession.

“We have heard the motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House and seconded by our respected colleague from Etsako Central to the effect that the former Speaker, Honourable Blessing Agbebaku, did not resign based on acceptable practice.

“Hence, his resignation has been converted to impeachment, and he remains suspended indefinitely. I want to say that we have said it more than once that all properties, government properties in his possession—cars, everything belonging to the government of this House—should be returned immediately,” Idaiye said.

He added: “It’s almost a week now; we have not heard or seen anything from the former Speaker. If he fails to return them on or before Friday this week, we have no option but to ask law enforcement agencies to go after him.”

Earlier, the Speaker had accused the now-impeached Speaker of alleged corruption and other offences and subsequently set up an investigative panel to look into the allegations.
