RwandAir, Nigeria Partner to Boost Africa Trade Through Expanded Cargo Corridor

RwandAir has signed a strategic partnership with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to strengthen the Nigeria–East and Southern Africa Air Cargo Corridor, a development aimed at enhancing regional trade, improving export market access, and advancing the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The partnership is expected to improve cargo connectivity between West, East, and Southern Africa, creating more efficient trade routes and supporting increased intra-African commerce.
Through the initiative, Nigerian exporters will gain direct cargo access to Kigali, Lusaka, and Harare, with onward connections to Nairobi and Johannesburg via RwandAir’s growing freight network. The expanded corridor is designed to facilitate the movement of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, manufactured goods, and other high-value exports across key African markets.
By reducing transit times and lowering logistics costs, the collaboration is expected to improve the competitiveness of businesses operating within the continent while opening new market opportunities for Nigerian exporters beyond West Africa.
For Rwanda, the agreement further strengthens Kigali’s position as a regional aviation and logistics hub, leveraging the country’s modern cargo infrastructure and strategic location to support trade across Africa.
The initiative aligns with the objectives of the AfCFTA, which seeks to create a single African market through improved connectivity, reduced trade barriers, and increased economic integration among member states.
Despite accounting for nearly 20 percent of the world’s population, intra-African trade remains relatively low compared to other regions. Industry stakeholders view improved transport and logistics networks as critical to unlocking the continent’s economic potential and strengthening regional value chains.
RwandAir has continued to expand its cargo operations as part of a broader strategy to support African trade and supply chains. Its cargo services play an important role in transporting time-sensitive and high-value goods, connecting businesses to both regional and international markets.
The Nigeria–East and Southern Africa Air Cargo Corridor is expected to deepen commercial ties among participating countries, create new opportunities for exporters and manufacturers, and contribute to a more integrated, competitive, and resilient African economy under the AfCFTA framework.
