Edo Queens Roar Into WAFU-B Final, Trash USFA 5-1

Reigning Nigeria Women’s Football League champions, Edo Queens, have booked their place in the final of the 2026 WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers after producing a scintillating performance to demolish hosts USFA of Burkina Faso 5-1 in Wednesday’s semi-final in Ouagadougou.

Edo Queens, who had earlier thrashed AS Garde Nationale of Niger 7-0 and defeated Côte d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas 3-1 in the group stage, went into the encounter determined to respond strongly after their narrow 2-1 defeat to Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies in their final group game.

Their response was emphatic.

Against a USFA side that had impressed during the group stage, including a 5-0 demolition of ASKO de Kara, Edo Queens dominated proceedings and found the net five times, while the Burkinabè hosts could only manage a consolation goal.

The victory means Edo Queens have now taken another major step towards their continental ambition, with only one match standing between them and the WAFU-B title.

Chairman of Edo Queens and Bendel Insurance FC, Chief Jarrett Tenebe, expressed delight over the performance, describing the result as a strong indication that the Nigerian champions are capable of going all the way.

Tenebe said the emphatic victory had further strengthened his belief that Edo Queens would emerge champions of the competition.

“I am delighted with this victory. The girls have shown great character, determination and the quality required to win this tournament. We have come this far not just to participate but to win, and I have every confidence that Edo Queens will lift the trophy,” Tenebe said.

He dedicated Wednesday’s victory to Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, whom he credited with providing maximum support for football and other sporting teams in the state.

“I dedicate this victory to our amiable Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his tremendous support and encouragement to our football teams in Edo State. His commitment has given our players and officials the confidence and motivation to compete at the highest level,” he said.

Tenebe added that the Governor’s backing had continued to inspire the state’s sporting community and demonstrated that the administration was serious about restoring Edo to its position as one of Nigeria’s foremost sporting states.

The chairman also praised the players, coaches and technical crew for their discipline and resilience, urging them to remain focused on the ultimate objective.

Edo Queens had entered the knockout stage as Group B runners-up with six points, behind Ampem Darkoa, after recording two victories and suffering one defeat. Their attacking record had already marked them out as one of the tournament’s most dangerous sides, having scored 11 goals in three group matches.

The 5-1 triumph over USFA, however, has taken their campaign to another level and placed the Nigerian champions within touching distance of continental glory.

For Edo State, the victory represents another significant moment for a football administration that has seen both Edo Queens and Bendel Insurance pursue major honours under the leadership of Tenebe.

With the final now beckoning, Edo Queens will be hoping to complete the job by lifting the WAFU-B trophy and securing Nigeria’s representation at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

Tenebe, meanwhile, remains confident that the best is yet to come.

“We are going for the trophy. The girls have what it takes, and with the continued support of Governor Monday Okpebholo and the people of Edo State, I believe Edo Queens will bring the WAFU-B title home.”
