The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has announced the All Progressives Congress candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo Winner of yesterday’s Edo Governorship Election, held on Saturday September 21, 2024.

Faruk Kuta, INEC’s returning officer in declaring the results, said: “That Monday Okpebholo of the APC, having satisfied the requirement of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

Election Results at a glance

Okpebholo and his All Progressive Congress (APC) pulled a total of 291,667 votes and emerged victorious in 11 out of the 18 local government areas in the state.

Asue Ighodalo and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 247,274 votes while Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) managed 22,763 votes in total.

The outcomes of the election is a reflection of the will of Edo people who the outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki has disenfranchised by his rancorous politics.

It is expected that the emergence of Okpebholo will heal the political landscape quickly and return trust of Edo people to the political leadership.

The incoming APC government will have to stop the capital flight that has characterized the eight years of Obaseki’s administration.

The fulcrum of APC campaign was asset verification and reclamation of all government assets, physical and resources. Understandably, Edo people will be in a hurry to see Okpebholo match his words with action.

Similarly, the APC government promised to return every land that was illegally seized from indigenous farmers and ceded to expatriate farmers as a way to guarantee food security in the state.

No doubt, Obaseki and his team may have boxes to tick on the questionnaire that the incoming administration will handout to key functionaries of the outgoing government that Edo people have accused of large scale corruption.
