The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned an avowed supporter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over the alleged circulation of a fake letter purportedly written by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the President of the United States of America.

The suspect, Mubarak Abdullahi, also known as Sardaunan Samari, was reportedly arrested on September 28 after sharing the alleged fake document on his Facebook page with the caption, “ATIKU IS COMING.”

According to the account of the incident, Abdullahi admitted during investigations that he shared the document and apologised for his action.

However, the apology did not prevent the DSS from proceeding with legal action against him over the alleged publication.

The suspect was subsequently arraigned before Chief Magistrate Court No. 10, Kabala Doki, Kaduna, which ordered his remand at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Kaduna.

The DSS has also filed a three-count charge bordering on alleged cybercrime and defamation against him at the Federal High Court in Kaduna. A date for his formal arraignment before the Federal High Court is yet to be fixed.

The case underscores the potential legal consequences of circulating allegedly fabricated documents and misleading information on social media, particularly where such publications are claimed to involve public officials.

The DSS has continued to pursue cases involving alleged unlawful online publications, highlighting the capacity of security agencies to investigate and trace individuals suspected of disseminating misleading content in cyberspace.

Abdullahi will have to defend his allegation in court.
