Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the cleaners, challenging their moral justification to form a coalition against the government of All Progressives Congress (APC), led by President Bola Tinubu.
In apparent reference to key promoters of the anti-Tinubu coalition, Governor Okpebholo reminded Nigerians that some of those promoting change in government now, were Senate Presidents for years but could not build roads to their villages.
He added that others sold off Nigeria’s assets and promoted insecurity by ushering in Boko Haram and kidnappers.
Okpebholo also jabbed Mr. Peter Obi, the famed leader of ‘Obidient’ group and warned the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections to get security clearance before coming to Edo State.
The governor made his remarks yesterday, Friday July 18, 2025, when he received a federal lawmaker, Marcus Onobun, representing Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben in the House of Representatives into the APC.
On Obi, Okpebholo warned that he must get security clearance before coming to the state. Okpebholo who was obviously piqued with Obi’s recent visit to Benin City on July 7, 2025, and also donated N15m million to St. Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences for the completion of projects in the school, said the 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate imported violence into the state.
“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance.
“His visit coincided with a resurgence of violence in the state and this will not be tolerated,” Governor Okpebholo stated.
Turning to the promoters of ADC, Okpebholo accused some of them of deep-rooted corruption and mismanagement of Nigeria’s economy.
“Some of them stole railway funds. Some were Senate Presidents for years and could not build roads to their villages. Some sold off Nigeria’s assets and even ushered in Boko Haram and kidnappers.
“These same people now want to form new parties. Today, SDP, tomorrow ADC, next ADA. We do not need insecurity merchants,” Okpebholo declared.
Governor described Onobun’s move to APC as the final nail in the coffin of the PDP in Edo State.
On the strength of the APC, Okpebholo retorted that the party was in firm control of Edo State, and promised that the remaining traces of the opposition would be completely erased by the 2027 general elections.
“Last week, we finally buried the PDP in Edo State. I saw someone crying at Ring Road, talking about having 65 per cent. That is what we call social media winning.
“When I said I would become the Governor, I meant it. Today, we are turning Edo into a construction site, and they can see it,” Okpebholo said.
He guaranteed that, Tinubu will get 2.5 million votes in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking at the defection ceremony the Acting Deputy State Chairman of APC, Sylvester Aigboboh, emphasized that the defection Marcus Onobun was a major boost for the party, as it prepares for the senatorial rerun election in August.
