The 2024 Governorship Election Tribunal holding in Benin City, Edo State capital will resume hearing today, after the unceremonial adjournment last Monday January 13, 2025.
The trial was stalled at the last court date due to the request by lawyers representing the 1st and 2nd respondents—Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Governor Monday Okpebholo.
An application by the respondents was read by the secretary of the tribunal, citing a conflicting Supreme Court hearing scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, 2025 (yesterday) in Abuja. Thereafter, all parties agreed for an adjournment to Wednesday, January 15, 2025 (today).
Meanwhile, the opposition party in the state, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have alleged “attempt to arrest some of their witnesses” listed to give evidence in the tribunal today.
They were said to have been having sections with the PDP candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo and his legal team, when some persons allegedly from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) found their way into the conference room of the hotel located on Aiguobasimwin road in Government Reservation Area, Benin City.
In a video sent to Midwest Herald newsroom, Ighodalo and the lead counsel to Ighodalo and PDP, Mr. Ken Mozia, SAN, and some other unidentified persons were seen in heated argument with yet to be identified men. The narrator of the video however identified them as “EFCC operatives.”
As at the time of this report, the EFCC is yet to issue an official statement on the incident,
This is a developing story!
