The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced the outcome of today’s local government election in the state.
Expectedly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s adopted Action Progressives Party, APP won all 22 out of 23 local government announced so far by the RSIEC.
Announcing the results in Port Harcourt, the RSIEC chairman, Justice Adolphus Enebeli, said that the declaration of results for Etche Local Government Area was put on hold “due to the continuous process of tallying the votes.”
He explained that the declaration for Etche Local Government Area will be made along with the declaration for the 319 council seats in the area in subsequent declaration of result.
The election witnessed violent incidents across the state and in particular, gun battle took at Rumuepirikom community in Rivers State, the country home of former governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Sources in the area explained how some people had come into the community and warned people not to come out for the local government polls.
Another source stated that when the electoral officers were about to arrive at a ward in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, some gunmen followed as well with heavy gunfire to scared off people from coming out to participate in the election.
It was suspected that at least, two persons sustained bullet wounds at Igwuruta community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the State, following moves by some loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, to enforce a High Court judgment that had earlier stopped the election.
