The senator representing Edo South Senatorial District has reaffirmed the vital role that Nigerian women play in the sustainance of the society and therefore, canvassed joint efforts “…as a nation to eliminate harassment, discrimination, and all forms of injustice against women.”

Senator Imasuen who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, made the appeal in his statement to mark the international Women’s Day.

The statement reads: “The good women of Edo State and Nigeria, good day to you all.

“Yesterday, we celebrated International Women’s Day—a day to honor the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women across Nigeria and beyond.

“Women are the backbone of our homes, the drivers of our economy, and the leaders shaping our future.

“Their sacrifices and achievements deserve not just recognition but real action—action that ensures they are empowered, protected, and given the opportunities they rightfully deserve.

“As we celebrate, we must also acknowledge that true progress is built on fairness, justice, and accountability. Every woman should feel safe, valued, and respected in every space she occupies.

“This is why we must continue working together as a nation to eliminate harassment, discrimination, and all forms of injustice against women. At the same time, fairness is the foundation of justice. Equity in law demands that both sides must be heard.

“Justice can not be one-sided, and due process must be upheld for both the accuser and the accused.

“Every allegation deserves to be taken seriously, but it must also be properly investigated and proven before conclusions are drawn. That is the standard of fairness that must guide us all.”

Senator Imasuen also used the opportunity to address the Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagha’s suspension from sitting. He explained that the Senate, like every institution, must be built on fairness, integrity, and accountability.

“I understand that recent events in the Senate have sparked discussions.

“Last week, my committee made a recommendation regarding misconduct within the Senate.

“While it may not have been popular with everyone, it was based on upholding the rules that govern our institutions.

“The Senate, like every institution, must be built on fairness, integrity, and accountability. When these rules are broken, those responsible—whether man or woman—must be held accountable.

“Let me be clear—the sexual allegations in question are outside the jurisdiction of the Ethics Committee as they have been presented to the courts.”

Imasuen went further to clarify that the Ethics Committee focused on Natasha’s only on her misconduct on the floor of the Senate and not the sex harrassement accusations which she leveled against the Senate President, Akpbabio.

“Our committee’s recommendations focused solely on misconduct on the Senate floor and violations of the rules that govern our institution.

“Our decision was about preserving the integrity of the Senate, not weighing in on external matters.

“Holding individuals accountable for their conduct within the Senate does not diminish their rights, nor does it silence anyone’s voice. Instead, it reinforces the principles of fairness and accountability that apply to all.”

He however noted that the International Women’s Day was not about politics but a global celebration of women.

“But today is not about politics—it is about celebrating the power, grace, and resilience of women.

“To every woman listening: You are strong. You are capable. You are unstoppable. No barrier is too high, and no challenge is too great for you to overcome.

“Your voice matters, your dreams are valid, and your contributions to this nation are immeasurable.

“So, on this International Women’s Day, let us recommit ourselves to a future where women are not just celebrated but empowered—not just included but given a seat at the table—not just heard but truly listened to.’

Imasuen called for concerted efforts to ensure a society that will serve the interest of all.

“et us stand together for fairness, justice, and opportunity for all,” He said.
