Opposition leader has welcomed the capture of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
Maria Corina Machado, Venezuela’s opposition leader who left the country in secret last year, has shared a statement on social media, with the caption: “Venezuelans, the hour of freedom has arrived.”
In the letter, she writes that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was removed from power after refusing a negotiated exit.

“Nicolas Maduro, starting today, faces international justice for the atrocious crimes committed against Venezuelans and against citizens of many other nations,” she says.
“Given his refusal to accept a negotiated solution, the United States government has fulfilled its promise to uphold the law.”
She added that her opposition colleague Edmundo Gonzalez – who the US and international observers say won the 2024 presidential election – should now assume the presidency.
Machado adds that the opposition will restore order in the country and free political prisoners.
“We have fought for years, we have given everything, and it has been worth it,” she says. “What had to happen is happening.”
Many political observers believe that President Donald Trump is more interested in regime change and cautioned that the wave may go round other countries the US perceive as being undemocratic.
