The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced the passing of the father-in-law of Mr. Tony Elemelu and one time Chairman of the bank, Chief Israel C. Ogbue, an elder statesman who died peacefully at the age of 99.
In a statement issued by the bank’s Board, Management and Staff, UBA described Ogbue as a principled leader whose life embodied integrity, discipline and institutional excellence across both public service and the private sector.

Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta State, Ogbue began his professional career in the Federal Civil Service before proceeding to the United Kingdom for further studies.
He later rose through senior management ranks at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1988.
His reputation as a governance expert subsequently earned him appointments to the boards of major institutions, including UBA. He joined the bank’s board in 2005 as a Non-Executive Director and became Chairman in 2011, a position he held until 2013.
During his tenure, the bank noted, he provided steady leadership at a defining period in UBA’s transformation, strengthening its culture of accountability, strong corporate governance and long-term sustainability.
Beyond the boardroom, Ogbue was widely regarded as a mentor and family patriarch. He was the father of Dr. Awele Elumelu and father-in-law to UBA Group Chairman Tony Elumelu.
Known for humility and deep faith, he often counselled younger generations to temper ambition with moderation, remain steadfast in adversity and trust in God.
“UBA Group extends its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates. We celebrate a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact, and honour his invaluable contributions to UBA and to Nigeria’s corporate landscape,” the statement said.
Chief Ogbue is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren. The family said funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
