Tribute to Maj Gen Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd)…A Soldier, Strategist, Statesman, Political Leader, Peace Advocate, Security Expert, Consensus Builder
By Orobosa Omo-Ojo JP
Today, I pay homage to a distinguished soldier, astute leader, and devoted patriot — Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (Retired) — whose life and voice continue to shape conversations on service, security, integrity and nation-building in Edo State and Nigeria.
General Esekhaigbe’s career in the Nigerian Army was marked by integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to duty. He upheld the highest standards of professionalism and selfless service — not for accolades, but for the security and dignity of his country.
Even after his uniform was hung, his service did not cease. He has remained a trusted voice in community and national life, offering insight grounded in experience, courage tempered by wisdom, and candor guided by principle.
His words reflect not only a lifetime of service, but a heart committed to the greater good of all.
On finding solution to national and local security challenges, the People’s General believes that solution must be thoughtful and strategic and must capture his belief in justice paired with resolve. “I do not support somebody waking up somewhere and say let me negotiate with a criminal and you think that will solve the problem, no.
“There must be a blend of approaches to counter-terrorism.” Cecil preaches.
His solution aptly reflects his soldier’s mind coupled with a statesman’s perspective. His positions on worrying community challenges highlights his understanding that lasting peace is not borne of force alone, but of comprehensive, intelligent strategy.
His leadership extended beyond policy. To his community, he is a leader whose presence inspires confidence. To the Nigerian nation, he remains a patriot whose legacy is etched in service, sacrifice, and honour.
In the emerging Edo State, he is carving out a niche as a stabilizing anchor between the South, Central and North. General Esekhaigbe’s life should remind us that true leadership is not defined by rank alone, but by integrity in action — by courage in conviction — and by compassion for others.
I salute you, Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.), my big brother, friend and fellow patriot. Thank you for your service to our nation and state—especially, as our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) glides through all the political vagaries.
Your experiences in Global Positioning System (GPS), ‘Bugle’ and Battle Management Systems (BMS) will undeniably make our administration’s sail less turbulence.
My firm—unwavering conviction and faith in your ability, is anchored on your precise headship as Chairman of the Inauguration Committee for Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State, where I served as Chairman of Media and Publicity Subcommittee. Your insistence on due process, standard and accountability demonstrated you as a ‘steward of results.’
