National Institute of Sports: Stakeholders Hail Tinubu’s Appointment of Shaibu as DG

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s sports industry have praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing His Excellency Comrade Philip Shaibu as the Director General of the National Institute For Sports. They described Shaibu as “an ardent sports administrator with unmatched results.”

The new DG comes into office after a remarkable service as Deputy Governor of Edo State where he managed sports and led the state to leadership position in sports. His administrative skills revived the Bendel Insurance Football Club and developed other sports all through his tenure.

Philip Shaibu who takes over with immediate effect from Prof. Olawale Moronkola, is expected to initiate reforms in the Institute to reposition it to leave up to its expectation of raising sound coaches and sports administrators in the country.

Philip Shaibu, a known figure in the country’s sports industry and beyond is expected to bring his expertise to the fore in his new role in alignment with the Renewed Hope agenda of His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The National Institute for Sports (NIS) was established in 1974 by the Administration of then Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces of Nigeria, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, based on the need by the government to improve Nigeria’s performance in international sporting competitions.

The Law granting its autonomy, Decree 31 was promulgated on the 8th of July 1992. The National Institute for Sports is a research and training Institute. It is a Parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports. Inter alia, the Institute is saddled with the responsibilities of producing top-rated coaches, sports managers, and sports scientists and conducting sports research.

His Excellency Comrade Philip Shaibu is a winner of Midwest Herald Award as Politician of the year 2024.
