Ethnic Tension Rises in Edo Over Death of Benin Businessman

The insecurity situation in Edo State came to the fore yesterday in Benin City, the states capital when reprisal attack was launched on members of the Hausa community by their hosts, who are mainly Benins.
According to reports gathered by Midwest Herald, trouble started when Benin youths in their numbers from Ogheghe community in Egor Local Government Area of the state, invaded the Hausa settlers over the killing of a businessman, identified as ‘Chizi Benz.’ The clash left several persons injured.
‘Chizi Benz’ was reported to have been stabbed to death by one Hausa youth over a an undisclosed business. The news of ‘Chidi’s’ death quickly spread and Benin youths stormed the streets with dangerous weapons in revenge mission.
The incident left several ‘Abokis’ with various degrees of injuries, just as others fled for safety. The situation degenerated when ‘Abokis’ Okada riders and roadside traders in Uwelu axis, reinforced to fight back the rampaging Benin youths.
It was learnt that policemen were drafted in fired tear gas to bring the situation under control.
The Police is yet toake official statement on the security crisis.
