The Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, Ms Eghe Ogbemudia is currently fighting to retain her position as the chief executive officer of the council. Although, the chairman who is a daughter of the late political father of the state, Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, has been facing challengs from some politicians within and outside the local government, the latest fight may have the better part of her.

Midwest Herald investigation reveals the travail of Ms Ogbemudia’s before the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) primary for the local government election in the state. Competent sources alleged that the leader of the local government, Mr. Odion Olaiye who doubles as the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), had withheld his support for her and showed support for his preferred candidate. Olaye’s position, Midwest Herald learnt too, got the blessing of some senior government officers who vowed to stop her from actualizing her aspiration.

The council boss however shoved her traducers off when Governor Godwin Obaseki came to her support and ceded the ticket to her. Since then, the plot to sack her became work in progress, until the latest violent confrontation.

As a prelude to her impeachment, a group of seven councilors from the council came together in a violent manner to suspend the Speaker of the House and in the process, Micheal Aigbekaen, supervisory councillor for environment and Loyalist of the chairman was stabbed.

It is being alleged that the Speaker was stabbed by the deputy leader, Mr. Preston Amayo, councilor representing Ward 5, who his accusers said led a group of seven councilors, allegedly loyal to Olaye to attack Michael Aigbekaen who Midwest Herald gathered is presently recovering from injuries he sustained.

However, what seems like a temporary relief came from the State House of Assembly after the intervention of Governor Obaseki.

The Assembly thereafter, ordered a status quo to be maintained until after the September 21, 2024 governorship election. The situation has however degenerated to cult rivalry and may escalate in the determined build up to sack the Local Government Council Chairman by some interest groups.

It I’ll be recalled that Governor Obaseki had vowed to deal with cult members in Edo State recently, but stakeholders questioned his sincerity and challenged him to look inwards if he was serious about solving the violent cult activities.

Attempts to speak with the rivalry groups failed as no one was ready to speak on the matter.
