Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has reportedly questioned the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Justice John Tsoho, for several hours over an alleged $160,000 said to have been found with his wife.

According to reports, the interrogation was part of an ongoing investigation by the EFCC into the source and circumstances surrounding the money.

Although details about how the funds were discovered and the outcome of the questioning have not been fully disclosed, reports say she was intercepted by EFCC operatives while travelling to Benue State and was returned to Abuja.

A whopping $160,000 cash was allegedly found in her possession at the time of her interception.

As at the time of this report, Justice Tsoho has not issued an official statement regarding his wife’s predicament. The EFCC is still being awaited to brief the press.

Before now, Justice Tsoho has been invited by the Code Conduct Bureau over his alleged failure to disclose some bank’s accounts. The invitation by the CCB was reportedly issued as part of the bureau’s response to the findings of their investigation.

According to reports, the Conduct Bureau (CCB) said that on April 29, 2024, Justice Tsoho allegedly failed to list at least three accounts with United Bank for Africa and one account with Access Bank in his name.

If the allegation is proven, it would constitute a violation of Section 15 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act.

Under Nigerian law, public officers are required to declare all assets, liabilities and bank accounts, including domiciliary accounts.

False or incomplete asset declarations can attract penalties such as removal from office, disqualification from holding public office for up to 10 years, and the forfeiture of improperly declared assets.

Justice Tsoho, however, has denied the allegations, insisting that he has fully complied with all legal requirements for asset declaration.
