The reported cult clash in Iruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area has continued to generate controversy with fingers pointing to the House of Representatives member in the area, Hon. Marcus Onobun.
The unverified report had it that scores of people were left injured as suspected cultists clashed in the home of Hon. Onobun.
The report also alleged that the former Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, was accused by some residents of hosting members of the Eiye confraternity at his residence which led to the violence.
An unnamed community leader was quoted to have demanded that “Hon. Marcus Onobun must be held accountable under the law.
“The fight against cultism in Edo State must be impartial. The same laws that apply to the average citizen must also apply to public office holders. If Hon. Onobun has breached the law, he must face the consequences,” in apparent reference to the demolition of his house.
When contacted, Hon. Onobun who has been accused of hosting the alleged Eiye cultists, vehemently denied the story, stressing that the allegations are not only false and baseless but also unfounded.
“My attention has been drawn to some unfounded and malicious rumours being circulated across various quarters, both online and offline, alleging my involvement or association with cult-related activities in Iruekpen. I, Rt. Hon. Marcus Onobun, honorable member, representing Esan West, Esan Central and Igueben Federal constituency categorically and unequivocally refute claims of any such association or involvement.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I am not directly or indirectly involved in cultism nor have I ever supported, encouraged, financed, or participated in any activity that promotes it in any form whatsoever.
“These allegations are not only false and baseless and unfounded but they also appear to be politically motivated, attempts to tarnish my hard-earned reputation, distract from the developmental strides we are making, and undermine the trust and confidence the good people of Iruekpen and beyond have reposed in me.
“Let it be on record that from reliable sources, I am informed that the clash arose between two indigenes of Iruekpen community at a brothel within the cattle market and not any where close to my residence.” Onobun stated.
He added that, “The security and safety of our people tops my priorities as a federal lawmaker, as no development sees the light of the day in an unsafe environment, thus, the recently commissioned Police station in Iruekpen community.
“I call on the media and the general public to exercise due diligence and verify fact before spreading information capable of causing panic and reputation damage.”
Midwest Herald gathered from eye witnesses that the two individuals that were involved in the fracas have been arrested by the police for questioning and released.
It was also revealed that the fight happened in a different quarter and was over an existing land disagreement between the two young men.
