Casualty struck yesterday night as the celebration of the Super Eagles victory against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa was obscured with the news of the death of Dr. Cairo Ojougboh.
The former federal legislator and ex executive of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC reportedly died while watching the tensed AFCON match between the Eagles and Bafana.
A short message sent to Midwest Herald reads: “Dr. Cairo Ojougboh had a cardiac arrest and died during the penalty shoot out. Delta State has lost an illustrious Son. Rest in Perfect Peace!!”
The highly tempered AFCON match renewed the football rivalry between the two African soccer super powers.
The match ended 4:2 in favour of Nigeria after both sides drew One all at regulation time. In the ensuing penalty shootout, the Eagles converted four, to South Africa’s two.
According to sources, Ojougboh collapsed while watching the intense football match, shortly after a penalty kick was awarded against Nigeria during the semi-final clash in Bouake, Ivory Coast.
