The Supreme Court of Nigeria has validated the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State. The apex Court gave the verdict this morning.
Before arriving at the verdict, the Court ruled that: “Since the petitioners didn’t challenge the result at all the polling units in Edo governorship election, it is absurd to ask for the nullification of the election and be declared winner of the said election.”
The decision brings to an end the electioneering circle which started on September 21, 2025 and authenticated the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo as Governor of Edo State.
In dismissing the appeal filed by the PDP and its candidate in the 2024 Edo governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, the court noted that the Appellants challenged 395 polling units out of the 5019 polling units in the entire state.
The court added that the Appellants did not discharge the onus of proof imposed on them as Petitioners under Section 135 of the Electoral Act for establishing substantial non-compliance.
It further held that the Court of Appeal was right in expunging the admission of the BVAS machines from the record and that the Appellants failed to tender admissible credible evidence to prove the two grounds of their petition.
Dismissing the appeal, the Supreme Court held that the appeal was without merit.
On his part, the chairman of APC in Edo State, Emperor Khalifa Jarret Tenebe said the victory is double celebration for him, because his daughter—Somi graduated today in the United States of America and the Supreme Court judgement that has affirmed the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo.
Tenebe thanked the APC legal team and most especially Edo State people that voted massively for the APC and Senator Okpebholo.
