Landmark Beach Resort: We are Negotiating to Avoid Demolition – CEO

Paul Onwuanibe, CEO of the Landmark Group, has disclosed that the company is in discussions with both the Federal and Lagos State authorities to prevent the planned demolition of the Landmark Beach Resort.
The resort faces demolition to make way for the 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.
Onwuanibe explained that his management was exploring options to avoid the demolition, including rerouting a portion of the highway to its original location along the “undeveloped Water Corporation Road median.”
He emphasized the importance of collaboration to sustain the existing socioeconomic activities while developing the coastal road.
In a statement, Onwuanibe highlighted the significant contributions of the Landmark Group ecosystem to the Nigerian economy, including billions of Naira in taxes annually and employment opportunities for thousands of Nigerians.
He expressed confidence in finding a solution that will preserve the resort while supporting the government’s infrastructure project.
The Landmark Group started operations in Nigeria in 2003, has reportedly invested over US$100 million in the economy.
Speaking on behalf of the company, Onwuanibe acknowledged Lagos State and Federal Government support and expressed optimism about achieving a mutually beneficial settlement.
On March 18, 2024, the Lagos State Government, acting through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, had issued a seven-day demolition notice to the management of Landmark Beach Resort on Victoria Island, due to encroachment on the designated right of way for the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
The Lagos State Government has already started the demolition of illegal structures infringing on the designated right of way for the project in Jakande Estate and Maiyegun, Lekki, aiming to reclaim land for the highway project.
