Abuja — Renowned financial expert and public servant, Mr. Osa Osunde (FCS, FCTI), has paid an emotional tribute to the late National Vice Chairman (South-South) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Osi Orbih, describing his death as a “deeply painful and monumental loss” to Edo State and Nigeria’s political landscape.
Chief Orbih, a prominent grassroots politician and former Edo State PDP chairman, died on August 31, 2026, at the age of 64. His death has triggered widespread mourning, culminating in a high-profile Night of Tributes at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, attended by prominent political leaders, including the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
In his tribute, Osunde reflected on his longstanding relationship with the late politician, which dates back four decades.
He recalled introducing Orbih to mutual friends, including Senator Ehigie Uzamere, during their formative years at Auchi Polytechnic in the mid-1980s.
That encounter marked the beginning of a lasting friendship built on shared experiences and mutual respect. Osunde fondly recalled how they would stay at the Orbih family’s property, Hilltop Hotel, further strengthening a bond of brotherhood that endured long before Orbih rose to prominence as a major figure in Nigerian politics.
Osunde said Orbih’s humility and accessibility remained among the qualities that endeared him to people across generations. He described him as a man who never forgot his roots and who maintained close ties with friends, associates, and ordinary party supporters, even after attaining national prominence.
According to Osunde, Orbih possessed a rare ability to bring people together, resolve disagreements, and inspire confidence during difficult moments. He noted that the late politician’s influence extended beyond party politics, as he consistently offered counsel, encouragement, and practical support to those around him.
Osunde also recalled Orbih’s courage and resilience in political life, saying he remained committed to his convictions and to the growth of the PDP despite the challenges and pressures that came with public service. He described Orbih as a disciplined party man whose organisational skills, loyalty, and understanding of grassroots politics helped strengthen the party’s presence in Edo State and the South-South region.
The financial expert said Orbih’s legacy would endure not only through the offices he held, but also through the people he mentored and the relationships he nurtured. He added that many of those who encountered the late politician would remember his generosity, frankness, hospitality, and willingness to stand by his friends in times of need.
Osunde described the late PDP chieftain as a loyal friend, an astute leader, and a man whose warmth, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his relationships touched countless lives.
“Chief Dan Orbih was more than a politician; he was a steadfast pillar to those who knew him closely. His dedication to democratic ideals, institutional leadership, and the advancement of Edo State is a legacy that cannot be easily forgotten,” Osunde said.
He added, “Dan was a man of deep convictions, but he was also a man of compassion. He understood the value of friendship, loyalty, and service. His door was open to people, and his words often carried reassurance and wisdom. His passing has created a void that will be difficult to fill.”
Osunde further said Orbih’s contribution to Edo politics would continue to be remembered by party members and political leaders who benefited from his experience and guidance. He urged those who mourned him to preserve the values of courage, loyalty, service, and commitment to the people that defined his public life.
The financial expert also extended his heartfelt condolences to the Orbih family, particularly his wife, Mrs. Florence Orbih, and their children, praying that God would grant them the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
Orbih’s final rites are drawing political associates, supporters, and leaders from across the political divide to celebrate a life marked by grassroots mobilisation, political commitment, enduring friendships, and public service.
